Unit A is a stacked maze of California's Coast Ranges, where northwest-to-southeast ridges climb from Pacific sea level to near 7,000 feet at Snow Mountain, with Clear Lake anchoring the middle. For deer hunters, the real story is the oak-chaparral interface between roughly 1,500 and 3,500 feet, where acorn mast and ceanothus browse concentrate movement, and where late-summer dryness leashes deer to perennial water like Cache Creek and the Russian and Eel River drainages.
