Unit 36B is classic Madrean sky island deer country, where compact volcanic ranges like the Atascosa, Pajarito, and Tumacácori shoot up out of mesquite grassland, stacking nearly 3,000 feet of relief (roughly 3,300 to 6,400 feet) into short, steep horizontal distances. Water rules everything here: perennial flow is scarce, so deer key on spring-fed canyon heads, impoundments like Peña Blanca and Arivaca lakes, and the acorn-bearing oak-and-grass seams that concentrate movement.
