Arizona Deer Unit 28

Unit 28 is a study in vertical contrast built around the Gila River, which cuts an east-to-west course through Arizona's far southeastern corner and carves the canyon country of the Gila Box before spreading into mesquite river bottoms near Duncan. For deer hunters that means reading water first: the perennial Gila, San Francisco River, Eagle Creek, and Blue River anchor a unit where dirt stock tanks stay monsoon-dependent and unreliable. From 3,000-foot desert flats up past 6,500-foot ridgelines in the Big Lue Mountains and Black Hills, oak mast and riparian green pull animals through the seasons.
