Unit 28 is true southeastern Arizona mountain country, a vertical maze along the New Mexico border where the San Francisco River corridor bottoms out near 3,500 feet and ridgelines climb toward 8,500, so deer hunters work a constant gradient from creosote and mesquite into pinyon-juniper and ponderosa. Animals travel creek bottoms during heat, feed on oak browse and post-monsoon grasses, and water keys on the San Francisco drainage, springs, and dirt tanks.
